  • The Challenge

Police identified a network selling counterfeit “gold” jewellery and luxury watches online. Concerns included fake hallmarks, misdescribed items, and unsafe levels of restricted substances. Independent expertise was required to verify the items and provide evidence strong enough for prosecution.

  • Our Approach

1 - Conducted hallmarking analysis to prove hallmarks were fraudulent.

2 - Carried out precious metal testing, confirming many items contained no gold content despite being marketed as 18ct.

3 - Applied REACH testing in our UKAS-accredited lab, identifying dangerous levels of nickel and lead.

4 - Worked with officers to provide expert witness reports and courtroom-ready evidence.

  • The Results

1 - Counterfeit goods worth over £250,000 were removed from the market.

2 - Consumers were protected from fraudulent, unsafe, and potentially harmful products.

Birmingham Assay Office gave us the technical expertise and credibility we needed to take counterfeit jewellery off the market. Their hallmarking knowledge, product testing, and expert evidence were crucial to a successful prosecution.
